Halloween is a wonderful time of year. Everyone goes out trying to find the best local scares and haunts. While local attractions are really nice, branching out and seeing every scary thing this country has to offer is even better. Our country is steeped in a bloody and spooky history all it’s own, making historical locations even scarier. Halloween is a fantastic time to travel, especially if you go to these truly creepy historic locations. Here are 5 truly terrifying historical places to spend your Halloween.
New Orleans:
New Orleans is one of the best places to get scared on Halloween or any night of the year. From the nightly ghost tours, and voodoo shops to the striking stone mausoleums of the cemeteries, this city is full of fright. There is a reason New Orleans provides the setting for some of the scariest stories ever. Go and lose yourself in the history of a city with one of the most sordid pasts in American History.
Salem:
Salem, Massachusetts is the home of the famous Salem Witch Trials. You can go to the Salem Witch Museum and learn the real history behind the trials or you can take the Salem Witch Walk, a tour guided by real modern day witches.
Waverly Hills Sanatorium:
Located in Louisville, Kentucky is Waverly Hills. Said to be one of the most haunted locations in America. They offer both public and private tours, where you can perform your own paranormal investigation, March through August. However, they are equally famous a chilling haunted house experience around Halloween. A truly scary location with an intense history. How will you know if the person who just bumped into you is there or a ghost?
Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast:
Have you ever wanted to sleep in a house where multiple murders occurred? How about one of the most famous murders in history? Now you can get the chance. Lizzie Borden’s house has been turned into a quaint little B&B in Fall River, Massachusetts. Sleep in the bedroom where Mrs. Borden was found, or share the couch where Mr. Borden took his final breaths. If staying the night is more of an experience than you want, they offer tours during the daylight hours.
Eastern State Penitentiary:
Made famous by many prime time ghost hunting shows, Eastern State is a truly terrifying location directly in the center of Philadelphia. A prison with a grisly past and the ghosts to prove it. They offer daytime tours of the prison but don’t think you’ll be safe while the sun is up. At night, they offer an intensely terrifying haunted house, called Terror Behind the Walls. They offer six different tours, all located within the cell blocks of the Penitentiary.
