I have some great tips for treating diaper rash. Its all part of our “raising kids” new category in the right side bar. Plus, I’ve ended my article with some great baby coupons. I have Huggies coupons, Pampers coupons and rash ointment coupons.
Diaper rash has so many different causes & treatments. Even mom’s that constantly keep baby changed can run into periods of diaper rash 1)after or during use of an antibiotic 2) with diarrhea from a stomach bug 3) from a yeast that invades a beginning rash 4) from highly acidic waste.
I ran into the yeast problem with baby #2 and highly acidic waste on baby #4 (my current 3 yr old) which caused the worse rash I had personally seen. Well let me share a few tips with you on some of the ways to treat diaper rash (there are lots of remedies)
1) Yeast infected rash – patchy red and raised. Generally broken skin and the raised part of the rash is swollen looking. If you suspect the rash is due to a yeast invasion be sure to a) keep baby super dry by constantly changing as soon as the diaper is soiled 2) blot don’t rub 3) consider a soaking bath if baby will tolerate it when diaper is soiled (hugely time consuming but healing is much faster) 4) use the following paste mixture
- yeast medication like a Monistat (to get rid of the yeast)
- a Cortizone cream (for swelling)
- Desitin paste (for protection of the skin) Don’t use the desitin creamy, you want the original paste with the highest content of Zinc
A friend that was a nurse practitioner in the ER taught me this formula and its wonderful. Just mix the 3 and apply to baby’s dry bottom as often as you change baby.
2) Rash from highly acidic waste. This rash just comes and even though you are constantly changing baby the rash just continues to get worse leading to broken down skin etc. If you suspect the rash is due to acidic waste then be sure to a) keep baby super dry by constantly changing 2) blot, don’t rub to clean, considering a soaking bath if baby will tolerate it when diaper is soiled (hugely time consuming) 4) use the following paste mixture
- Desitin paste (for protection of the skin) Don’t use the Desitin creamy, you want the original paste with the highest content of Zinc
- Maalox liquid ant-acid
Mix the Maalox with the Desitin & apply to baby’s botton with each changing. I learned this little trick from my pediatrician. It worked wonders but sounded absolutely insane. Then I thought about it and it made sense. If the waste after birth is too acidic then protect baby’s bottom with alkaline to counteract it! Rash cleared up and baby was happy again!
