Yes I too wish that kids popped out with an instructions manual. Funny thing is that my teenage son is sure that when he’s being disciplined that its something that I am doing to him when in fact discipline is really something I’m doing for him and for my other kids (I still have little ones in the house). My job is not to be my teens friend. My job is to be a great mom that models the best person she can be and calls her teenager to the floor when he’s not being the best person he can be.
I look at motherhood as a short task to help my kids be great citizens of the world, great parents, and great partners. I’m only given 18 short years for this life changing task.. To accomplish this task I’ll have thousands of conversations, spend a few nights crying, be embarrassed sometimes, be filled with pride, and of course hug my child over 1,000 times. My parenthood isn’t exactly a job but more of a journey where we all grow and change in the face of trials tribulations and joys.
What I’ll pass on isn’t just a bad or good habit but a family legacy – a heritage of a tribe of people on a modern journey with lots of distractions that can easily pull us away from the real meaning of our lives. But, I was blessed to be near my father in his final days and it was so crystal clear to me that you don’t leave planet Earth with any things. We leave with the experiences of our family tribe. We’re shaped by these events and they’ll affect us until we return to our creator.
Sometimes when I lay down for bed late at night, I pray that my kids know that they were loved, that their lives are not a lie and they they live being true to themselves and the world.
