With all the different horrors I am sure you have heard about with other schools we all know it is something no parent ever wants to think about. However, there is a need to find out what safety and emergency procedures your school has in place. Before school starts it is a good idea to meet with teachers or even the school principal to find out what they do and how things work in emergencies. Emergencies can happen anywhere and at anytime – no families or neighborhood is exempt from them. After you learn what they are its is a good idea to talk to your child or children about what they should do in different circumstances. No I don’t mean to the point of scaring them, but it’s just good to go over the basics. Even with simple things like what to do if approached by a stranger on the playground, what to do if the fire alarm goes off. The more that your child knows ahead of time the more prepared he or she will be to handle it.
Here are a just a few ideas of things you may want to ask the teacher or principal about.
- Where to go when fire alarm sounds
- Nearest Exit to classroom
- What to do if you miss the bus at school
- What do do if you see a gun
- What to do if there is a fight
- What to do if you are being bullied
Again these are just a few ideas to cover as I am sure there are more that I am not thinking of at the moment.
I know it is a hard thing to have to think about. Even the thought of our babies being in harms way is so hard to deal with. But, in today’s world it is something we have to be prepared for. So any knowledge that we can arm them with, the better chances of a good outcome if something was to ever happen.
