Wake up, Back to School Routine, It’s Time to Go
With school approaching, the lazy Days of Summer must give way to their cousin, Back to School Routine – and it seems like there’s always a squabble during this changing of the guard. Here are five tips to make that transition a welcome one in your house.
Get sleep schedules switched now. If you have late risers, or are one yourself, set the alarm clocks now when an emergency nap is still possible. According to experts like Dr. Mehmet Oz, you’ll have more energy if Do. Not. Hit. Snooze. Power through it a week or two ahead, and you’ll be sitting pretty for those First Day of School photos.
- Stage a Fire Drill. No not really. But do a run-through of your first morning – before your first morning. Make it a game. See if you, your spouse, and your shorter family members will be able to get it together and out the door before the bus or carpool arrives. If you get an A, treat everyone to breakfast out (you’re already dressed, right?) and some back-to-school shopping.
- Plan your meals for two weeks. Trust me – you’ll wonder why you never did this before. I make a list of our favorite 5-10 meals and keep it simple. Those that can be made ahead, I make this weekend – then freeze. Others I simply provision for. I plan out my strategy according to that first 2-week schedule, with on-the-go meals for nights we’re coming and going. With all the uncertainty of the new schedule, at least I don’t have to wonder: “What’s for dinner?”
- Snack Attack: Nothing beats the brain-drain of high-sugar, processed snacks in the afternoon. Can you pronounce “food coma?” Raw foods are best after school – fresh fruits and veggies. I use inexpensive plastic bags to portion out berries, apple slices, carrot and celery sticks in snack-size portions. My kids know those are available all the time – and never need to ask.
- Timers and Reminders. Don’t overlook the power of lists – especially on your smartphone. Use reminders, timers and calendars to help keep your new schedule straight. If you haven’t ever played with these – well, there’s no timer like the present.
