Easy Applesauce Recipe with pictures of the simple process. This is such a fun & easy homemade applesauce recipe – I promise! Plus, have you ever wondered “Is applesauce healthy?” I says YES!
A friend recently shared a jar of homemade crockpot applesauce that she and her kids made for a homeschool math and home economics project. My family loves applesauce, and this was a tasty treat. She was kind enough to share her healthy homemade applesauce recipe and a few photos with me to share with my Family Frugal Fun readers!
You will need a crockpot to make this easy applesauce. Other ingredients are:
10-12 apples – any variety, but my friend used a mixture of Gala, Jonathan, and Macintosh which are all fairly sweet naturally. This keeps you from having to add sugar.
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 2 tablespoons cinnamon (feel free to add more if you prefer cinnamon applesauce)
Directions to make easy applesauce:
First, peel and core all of the apples. Be sure to cut away any bad spots. You will then cut the apples into chunks or thick slices.
Put apples and lemon juice in crockpot, and cook on low setting. After 2 hours, remove lid, and stir. At this point the apples should have softened up quite a bit. Add honey and cinnamon, and cook for 2 more hours.
After 4 hours, stir well. Use a hand mixer or immersion blender to better mix the ingredients and fully bring it to an applesauce consistency.
This will yield approximately 3-4 pints of applesauce, depending on the size of apples used. It will keep in a refrigerator for about 2 weeks, or you can use an at-home water bath canner like the Discovery Canning Set from Ball. It is a great “starter” canner for high-acid foods such as jellies and sauces, and you can use it with any large pot that you already have. The Discovery Canning Set makes learning to do at-home canning really easy!!!
As you can see, this was a really easy and fun project for my friend and her kids. I definitely plan to give it a try. Knowing that I’m feeding all-natural foods to my family is a great feeling, and being able to say you made something delicious with your kids is terrific, too!
