In my series on uses for Borax I wanted to make sure I popped in some fun uses for Borax for family science projects so I’m posting the most fun recipe on How to Make Borax Slime! Lol ☺ As a homeschool mom we love to make all kinds of fun things and slime is a must. It’s plyable, goopy, and best of all….. FUN! Well you can make slime with Borax. Borax comes from California where one of the world’s largest deposits of boron was discovered in 1913. What I like best about Borax is that it doesn’t cause cancer, accumulate in the body, or absorb through the skin. On your box of borax you’ll see that it may be listed as “poison” on the box, however keep in mind that it’s only toxic at very, very high levels. (like baking soda for instance, and even water if you ingest enormous amounts). But, remember that smaller animals and kids only need to ingest smaller amounts of anything toxic so keep out of reach of kids to make sure it is never accidentally eaten.
Borax Slime Recipe Ingredients:
- Borax powder
- water
- 4 ounce (120 ml) Elmer’s white glue
- teaspoon
- bowl
- jar or container
- food coloring (Totally optional ☺)
- measuring cup
Directions to make your Borax slime
- Pour 4 onces of the the glue into your jar or container. If you have a big bottle of glue, you want 4 oz or 1/2 cup of glue.
- Add 1/2 cup of regular tap water).
- Add food coloring now at this point in the process if so desired. Otherwise, the Borax slime you make will be white (which was fine with us)
- In a separate container, mix one cup (240 ml) of regular tap water into the bowl and add 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of your borax powder.
- Now, slowly stir the glue mixture into the bowl of borax solution.
- Place the slime that forms into your hands and knead until it feels dry. It doesn’t take long and kids find this part of the process REALLY fun! (Don’t worry about the excess water remaining in the bowl – it’s not a big deal.) The more you play with the slime less sticky it will become.
Note:
Don’t get this stuck in your hair or you may need to cut it out (my son learned this lesson the hard way – memorable moments for sure!)
Don’t eat it. Borax is used for all sorts of things and is considered totally environmentally friendly but it is never meant to be eaten EVER.

We did this at girl scout camp and the kids LOVED it…but I think a few of the adults had just as much fun!
