Most of you all already know that I’m a home school mama! Love it, wouldn’t trade it for the world – time with your family, the schedule, I love everything about it. Well to make sure we get “out there” we have joined a home school cooperative where we meet once a week for classes, activities and fellowship with other home school families. Right now my daughter is taking a class called Studies of Ancient Rome and they just had so much fun with this cool mosaic craft from Oriental Trading company.
The ancient Romans used mosaics to in their home and in the towns to tell stories (kind of like their version of cake drawings) and so when studying Rome do as the Romans do so the kids an a fun opportunity to make their own homemade mosaic story in class this week. My daughter is still talking about it and it was so simple to do (I’ve never made a mosaic in my life prior to this! Lol)
So we ordered the square trays and the tiles, add some glue and some other minor items and guess what you have?
I tile story as if you were in ancient Rome! How cool is that, huh!!!!
Kids learn so much better with hand on activities as opposed to lecture format and this is just another great example of that fact – My daughter is still talking about the Romans!
This craft was fun, inexpensive (my favorite part) and educational when paired with a lesson plan. All of the pieces came in good condition and the ordered was exactly as expected!
Note: Here is the process for the class in case you’d like to make something similar with a group of kids.
If you are going to do a pattern, draw it out on the work surface. Work on a small area at a time fitting the mosaic pieces tightly together with little space between each tile. More mature crafters can use tile nips to break tiles into smaller pieces or shapes (although they will not be precise). Once you have a small area of mosaics in the position that you want them, use mosaic glue and glue each piece down. Then continue onto a new area until your design is complete. Once finished you may desire to grout your design to complete the look or you may desire to keep it as it is. Either way, mosaic glue is strong enough to hold the tiles in place. FYI – If you are using a textured tile – you will either want to place them face down (so the flat side is up) if you are going to grout it OR textured side up is ok if you are not going to use grout.
I did receive these items at no charge from Oriental Trading however the opinions and excitement about the company are 100% my own!
