School of Rock the Musical – Review
“Class is now in session” for the School of Rock the Musical & it’s been quite some time since I left the theater with my kids singing and humming the tunes on the car ride home, the next day, and all weekend long. Andrew Lloyd Webber has outdone himself capturing the song and lyrics that describe the feelings of average people like you and me with the songs like “Stick it to the Man” where the new teacher at Horace Green Academy explains life thru music to a group of perfectly groomed school children.
The musical follows the show/movie fairly closely except that you have the experience of feeling the musical talent and energy performed live and in person at one of my favorite theaters in the Mid-Atlantic region, The National Theatre in Washington DC. As you’re in the audience you can’t help but wonder how they found such talent to play the parts of young characters like Tomeka who end up being a lead singer at Horace Green after busting out of her shell from living a life of being a shut down, conservative and stuffy kid. I get chills just thinking about her belting out those notes in that unexpected and surprising scene where she finds her voice and shocks her classmates and new teacher!
My favorite twist was how they played out the part of Mr Schneebly! Mr. Schneedbly was called by Horace Green to be a substitute teacher but Ned Scheebly’s looser and jobless friend snags the job after answering the phone. He’s just looking to earn a few bucks and never expected to end of being the class hero while helping the students find themselves thru music, thus creating a better life for them with their families at home.
While the musical is about classical rock music from the 70’s and 80’s era, the all new the music by Andrew Lloyd Webber is what captures the feeling, emotion and beat that has you clapping, yelling and laughing thru the production of this musically inspiring stage performance. The tweens at Horace Green really play their own instruments on stage, dance, and sing leaving you begging for more.
School of Rock the Musical at the National Theatre in Washington DC gets a 5 Star review from Family Finds Fun! Well done!
