Cruising on the Adonia to Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic (Adonia review, Fathom review, Amber Cove review series)
Day 1: We boarded at the Port of Miami which is truly an experience in and of itself. I’d never boarded a cruise ship anywhere other than Port Canaveral which is nice, but I have to say that the Port of Miami is breath-taking and spectacular. The beaches you pass as the Adonia leaves port, the beautiful City of Miami and, of course my favorite part, boarding the Adonia. My anticipation grew and my thinking expanded as the high rises were further and further in the distance. I was doing it – Impact travel. I had read about travel where you make a difference but as a mom of 4 kids, I figured that was forever out of my reach….. until now. I’m here, opening the door to my stateroom where I’ll sleep for the next 7 days, walking the floors of the ship, and meeting the most incredible travelers who, like me, are on an inner and outer adventure. It’s an exploration of life, humanity, and a tour of me. It’s me as a mom, a daughter, a friend – me making a difference and looking at the impact that my family has on another human that is probably someone just like me at a very basic level, that wants the best for her children and her community.
We entered our staterooms and were pleasantly surprised with the lovely accommodations. The bathrooms filled with Fairtrade personal products made with Fairtrade ingredients. I like that. Oh and in the shower – Shower gel made with organic and natural extracts made by Eco-Boutique. Perfect!
Outside of your room you’ll find a fun dry-erase board & pen. We had erased and rewritten on this board 3 times already just to get a good laugh within the family but I have to say that I loved walking down the halls to read the fun, thought evoking words written by other travelers – serious, funny, spiritual, hysterical. It almost makes you want to knock on the door and strike up a conversation but best of all, it reminds me that these travelers aren’t ordinary people. They’re people who are “getting their feet wet” so to speak, making a small difference in the world, while in a safe environment.
Now on to the magnificent food! As soon as you board the ship you’re immediately welcomed to a delicious fresh buffet of meat, fruits, grains, entrees, and delectable treats in the Conservatory. It felt like a buffet fit for a king and I was so pleased to see the big smiles of approval on my sons faces since they too had no idea what to expect on this voyage.
That evening we sat for a more formal table service meal that was 5 star, no doubt. It was called the Pacific Restaurant. Although the brochures say “smart casual” for the attire on this cruise, clearly there was a huge mix of passengers wearing dresses and suits to T-shirt and shorts. The wait service was top notch and just like the lunch, every entrée served seemed prepared just for our table and very fresh.
Later that night, we caught the sun set over water’s horizon and watched as some small silver fish jumped alongside the ship. Surely my day couldn’t have ended any more perfectly.

Looking forward to reading about the rest of your cruise – especially your impact excursions and the waterfalls! We are going on June 19th. Can’t wait!
