It’s no secret that if the mind of our children aren’t challenged and used during the summer, they’ll forget so much of what they learned in school last year! To beat “summer brain burnout” you’ll need to set some rules this season so that kids keep using their brains. Here are my top 3 simple things moms can do to keep kids learning in a fun and easy way while school is out of session.
- Make up a contest to keep things lively and fun. For instance: Create a monthly or bi- monthly contest to read X number of books/magazines or educational comics and then reward your child with a favorite trip or educational event like to the local zoo, library or museum. They’ll want to read and keep up their skills and they’ll also be excited to get out and earn some family time fun! Maybe even plan a picnic for your library or zoo day!
- Have a family meeting and map out potential field trips then vote for the top 3 to attend (1 per month at a minimum). Ask older kids to map out the driving route and younger kids if they’d like to participate, you can develop a scavenger hunt on the field trip.
- Keep reading fun and exciting. I recommend the above National Geographic magazines and workbooks. They’re not your typical “school book” because they’re full of fun and interesting tidbits yet still quite educational with math, science, and lots of creative mysteries to figure out! You can find all 3 on Amazon. I’ll list the names for you below:
- National Geographic Almanac 2020
- Brain Games by National Geographic Kids
- Weird but True by National Geographic kids
