Best Egg Laying Hens – With Easter around the corner and the price of eggs on the rise many folks are thinking of saving a few bucks with a few hens in the back yard. After all, it’s healthy, fun and a great way to make sure you always have eggs, right? Well, although I’m not an “eggspert” I’ve done a considerable amount of research of the best egg laying hens.

The Ameraucana, also known as Easter Eggers, are easy to handle and lay medium size eggs. They have average to above average egg production and are winter hardy, making them good to keep in your chicken coop year round no matter where your location. They are easy to handle, non-aggressive and adapt well to either confinement or free range.
In addition to being one of the best egg laying hens and a great family chicken due to its calm temperament, the Ameraucana is also pretty darned cute! Instead of ear tufts, they have muffs and a beard and these little rumpless beauties have leg shanks that are slate blue. They are docile and non-aggressive, usually drawing out the children in the family; easy to hold and easy to love.
Ameraucana’s are a uniquely American breed derived from the South American Araucana. They are a relatively new breed, being accepted by the APA in 1984. They are of medium stature, weighing six to seven pounds. They come in Black, Blue, Wheaten, Blue Wheaten, Buff, Silver and White. Although they are somewhat rare, they are such a wonderful addition to your flock that they are worth searching for.
