Ok Guys out there – if you are in the “dog house” from the Christmas tree this year this is how you make it up 😉

Some of you are going to think I am “nuts” but now is the time to start thinking and planning your gardens. I have about a 1/4 acre that I plant each year. Maggie does as well. Let’s be serious, there is nothing like an Eastern Shore “Maryland” tomato when you grow it yourself, however last year I got very close to it here in Florida..

Things to plan for & remember:

Plan where and how large the garden will be
Decide what you plan to put in your garden
Read, read, read to make sure your plants make “good” neighbors to each other
Soil test as soon as you can, many of your co-ops will test for free or at a minimal price
Put your garden down on paper even if you cannot till yet, because every year you need to rotate it
Decide what you want to start by seed or by plants and then,
Start buying your seeds.. NOW, go in baby steps if you must and buy only a few every 2 weeks.  That way it isn’t a large amount of money at once.

Once you have an established garden think about these things:

You need worms.  You can buy them or raise them now a days, but you need to have them.
You HAVE to have bees, and bees are hard to find today.  I had to find a bee keeper to store some hives on my property.
You will also benefit by composting.  I simply put my compost items in bags and send the hubby or Melanie to dig a hole in the garden and drop it in.

I enjoy my garden so much and my entire family benefits from the fresh veggies every year. We all know the prices of veggies today in the supermarket so think about how much money you can save by planting even a couple plants of Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Peppers, Squash & Onions.

Burpee has to sell the most Gorgeous & Healthiest plants I have ever seen.  None of the seeds I have purchased have ever failed to produce for me.  Some other stores –  it’s hit and miss and I have learned that it’s better and less time consuming to avoid that part of gardening… Burpee offers many things to the home grower so go HEREand see what they have for you.  Every year I ask for a gift card from Burpee.  That may be another option for you as well.   They even have that GREAT new e-gift card, how GREAT is that?:)

The first episode premieres 12/29 @ 8:00 pm Central Time on the TLC channel.  We are NOT hoarders or shopaholics here at Family Frugal Fun, but this should be fun to watch.  We like to save money so we can have more fun with our families and live the best life we were meant to live.

We’re nearing the end of the month and you know what that means.  You need to go through coupons.com and print out any coupons that you know you will use.  Sometimes the coupons make it to the next month and sometimes they are gone by the 1st.

What can we expect into the new year?  Expect to see sales on exercise equipments, dieting books and low calorie/low fat foods.  February will bring mega candy sales again and once we near the spring you’ll see fish hit a rock bottom low going into the season of Lent before Easter.  That would be a good time to stock up.

In a few more days Christmas products will be marked down 75% – that is when I’d buy.  I always pick up at least 1 new item for next year and depending on the sales I find, it may be several items.  Don’t be shy about picking up the phone and asking if your local Walmart or Target etc has marked their items down to 75% yet.  Whatever you do, don’t go out of your way for a deal!  The price of gas is too high to do that.
