For history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts, bird watchers and hikers, Natural Bridge State Park is one of the best kept secrets in Virginia. Geographically speaking, Natural Bridge is about 3 hours outside of Washington DC, depending on where you live of course. The park has a past to tell, waterfalls, and one of the most beautiful and naturally occurring vistas just begging for exploration!
Chances are you haven’t even heard of Natural Bridge Virginia. It’s a small place, seemingly in the middle of no where, but filled with tales of stories from the past. This natural wonderland was once owned by none other than Thomas Jefferson and is listed on the National Registry of Historic places.
Honestly it wasn’t until my 3rd passing on the highway, en-route with my daughter, deep into the mountains of North Carolina to visit a childhood friend, that we decided to stop on a whim. Who would have guessed that we’d spend half a day frolicking and enjoying our new found history lesson while experience this karst terrain as we hiked a well laid out path culminating in a 30 foot cascading waterfall!
People in the not too distant past used this area’s resources for survival as well as the landscape for inspiration and oh boy, is it inspiring…..! Here are some tips to help you enjoy this profound outdoor adventure;
- Pack a lunch – although there is a lovely gift shop with a café for casual dining, I high recommend you pack a light lunch and eat at the picnic tables provided underneath of the natural bridge. After all, you came for the scenery!
- Hiking boots are optional – the trails at Natural Bridge are stone and paved so if you’re simply in a comfortable pair of sneakers you’ll be perfectly fine. Although you’ll see rugged terrain, this park and it’s trails are convenient and welcoming for visitors and you’ll be fine without an expensive pair of hiking boots!
- Purchase a pass – there is a fee to enter this State Park however if you’re a nature lover or you just want to start walking more and get outdoors I’d suggest you purchase the Virginia State Park Pass and put it to good use as opposed to paying the entrance fee. The State Park Pass will give you entrance to Natural Bridges and may be purchased in the visitors center/gift shop area.
- Bring your family – this park is perfect for multi-generational outings and is kid and elderly friendly!
- Schedule a field trip – this park also offers cultural programs, a ranger station and nature programs. After spending the afternoon I’d highly recommend this park for a scouting trip, school field trip, or a place to meet up with friends to talk and walk.
See you on the trail from our next adventure! Cheers!
