Just because you may be living a frugal life doesn’t mean you miss out on the things in life that bring joy to a child – like butterflies. We’ve done this every year (we’re a home school family) and it’s so much fun with this discount Butterfly growing kit! Once you purchase the kit you just need to pack it away each year and purchase the butterfly larvae (no longer needing the kit because you’ll have that).
One year I ordered the butterfly larvae a little later than usual and they weren’t hatched by the time we left for our beach vacation that year in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Wondering what we did? Well it’s just a 6 hour drive so we took the butterflies with us and released them on the beach! It was so beautiful and wonderful!
Well for years and years I planted zinnias because I had read that butterflies love zinnias. One year when I was pregnant I was just unable to get out and plant like I had always done before…. very problem pregnancy. So I had a small spot of mint that I let take over and go to flower. To my amazement, the flowers were beautiful and we discovered 3 times as many butterflies. Butterflies like mint flowers more than zinnias! It was a hit…. by accident! Mint grows quickly, requires pretty much no attention what so ever, is hard kill even if you don’t have a green thumb and butterflies love it!. I don’t even bother with zinnias any more. I don’t have the cost of buying the seeds, fertilizers, or the care of them and I have tons of butterflies! We’re quite happy! Well there is also a great deal on butterfly kits right now. We have a butterfly kit and we get new caterpillars (in the mail) every single year. Butterflies are naturally tame and when you get the caterpillars and hatch them, they’ll sit right on your finger! Its really neat! These Butterfly growing kits are just $12.51 right now! When I teach the butterfly unit I also use these 2 really expensive things. 1) a plastic replica of the butterfly lifecycle becuase the kids want to hold and touch these larvae but you really can’t play with them in these stages so I found this to be helpful 2) Books on the lifecycle. From Butterfly to Caterpillar Book – This one is great for younger kids. And this one is on Kindle that can be for a child a little older: The Life Cycles of Butterflies: From Egg to Maturity, a Visual Guide to 23 Common Garden Butterflies
