It’s official, the for those of you that haven’t heard the news yet – Broadway is back at the National Theatre in Washington DC! A global pandemic may have delayed us, kept us home, and left us all feeling a little bit crazy but it’s now time to get out and support your local theater! We were fortunate enough to make it to opening night and I’d like to share my quick review with you and encourage you to go have fun and support the National Theatre in Washington DC so we can keep seeing top notch, Broadway class entertainment!
This iconic show is based in Baltimore in the 1960’s when segregation was still alive and kicking. You’ll see some amazing stage sets with row homes showcasing everything you remember about Baltimore. The star of the show is high school girl Tracy Turnblad and my goodness, she has a teen obsession with The Corny Collins TV Show and although she’s chunky and not deemed one of the “pretty girls,” she even dreams of becoming Miss Teen Hairspray for 1962. Tracy doesn’t necessarily fit in but she’s packed with song, dance and a passion for life that somehow helps her to land a spot on the dance show where she naively begins the quest to end racial segregation.
The supporting cast is absolutely phenomenal! Niki Metcalf played the role of Tracy but equally important to the musical was Edna and Wilbur Turnblad played by Andrew Levitt and Christopher Swan, respectively. Oh how Tracy’s parents kept you laughing with their witty charm and funny jokes about her moms weight and size making clothes for “bigger women” towards the end of the show.
This musical is bursting at the seems with energy and the dancers on stage leave you feeling like you wanna start a flash mob dance off right in the aisles! It’s impossible not to be enamored by the catchy tunes, bright colors, and dazzling stage presence of the cast. In these troubling times, if Hairspray can’t cure what ails us, then nothing can.
