Why STEM Curriculum is Important and Needs Your Help
Do you like to sit in a boring lecture and listen to someone ramble on about something you have never experienced? Well, kids don’t either. The truth is that people, young and old, learn more when they are actively involved in their education. This is where the new STEM program comes into play and making learning fun and engaging for kids. However, because of lack of funding and other financial restraints, schools, and teachers alike cannot afford to incorporate STEM-based learning into their classrooms. However, YOU can donate to your local community to help kids right where you live to make a difference immediately!
What is STEM?
STEM is a curriculum strategy that focusses on educating students in 4 basic disciplines: Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Rather than teaching each of these subjects as separate lessons, STEM curriculum integrates all 4 disciplines into a cohesive learning model. Instead of having a teacher stand up and lecture about a specific subject, kids have actively engaged through project-based lessons that incorporate all areas.
Why is STEM Important?
STEM is important because it is giving kids skills in the areas that will have jobs as they get older. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that by 2018, the following STEM careers will make up the market:
- 71% of jobs will be in computing which requires technology.
- 16% of jobs will be in traditional engineering.
- 7% of jobs will be in physical science.
- 4% of jobs will be in life sciences.
- 2% of jobs will be in mathematics.
These statistics show that 100% of jobs are going to need people to work in one of the 4 learning components of the STEM program. This means, if we want the future of our kids to succeed, it is crucial that they are learning science, technology, engineering, and mathematics more than they ever have before. Not only are future jobs going to require STEM knowledge, but entry level jobs will now require a bachelor’s degree or higher. This means the children of the future need STEM programs in their school.
How You Can Help!
Orkin is currently partnered with DonorsChoose.org which reaches out to help give kids in all schools the STEM education they need. The Orkin Start with Science campaign will let you fund in-class learning experiences in public and charter schools nationwide via DonorsChoose.org.

Orkin is a company dedicated to the success of our children. They have donated $325,000 that has funded over 1,400 projects for more than 123,000 schools across the states! The goal of this campaign is to raise awareness for the Orkin Start with Science initiative which will help YOU support science education and help teachers in your area and across America to bring STEM projects to life in their classroom!
We Support STEM!
Because our family values the education system and wants to help the future generations to succeed and make a difference in this world, we have decided to be a part of the help the STEM program needs. Thanks to Orkin Start with Science, we are able to choose a science or math project that inspires us, and so can you!
Be a part of the change, and help our future generations succeed by donating to Orkin Start with Science campaign. As a part of this campaign, we can give a gift card to one of our readers to help fund one of the many STEM-based programs!

I am a teacher. I see how STEM impacts students. My favorite activity last year was one that combined language arts and science. Students used copper wire, magnets and batteries to create a dancing character from a story they read. If I win this donorschoose card, you can bet I will use it wisely!

STEM is important because it contributes to the development of the sciences, medical, tech, etc fields. I work with math and see how kids find it difficult. But it is used in all fields.
