Homeschool Curriculum Swap – If you are a homeschooling family, you probably use lots of curriculum books; which means you probably know how pricey these books can be. Earlier this week, I was invited to a really unique event: a homeschool curriculum swap. Unfortunately, other commitments kept me from attending, but it is definitely something I am interested in participating in in the future.
A homeschool curriculum swap works just like any other type of swap-meet. In this case, the only things you bring to swap are textbooks, manipulatives, and educational items like DVDs. In some cases, educational toys can also be swapped at an event like this.
Some swaps are set up with different tables for each type of item: math texts, workbooks, reading books, DVDs, and so forth. This way you can easily walk through and see what is available in certain categories.
From what I have learned, there are a couple of different ways to trade at a curriculum swap, depending on how the organizer sets it up. Some have more rigid rules – for example, you can only swap books for other books, while some allow you to assign a dollar value for things and swap for things with similar prices. If you bring ten items to the swap, you would leave with ten new-to-you items.
Another way to do a curriculum swap would be to simply sell the items at a low cost, then you can pocket the money to buy the next year’s school books.
A curriculum swap is a fabulous way to clear out what your homeschooling family no longer needs. It is also a great way to pick up some gently used items for use in your home classroom. If you are a fellow home educator, I’d love to hear if you have ever been to an event like this, or just what your thoughts are on attending a homeschool curriculum swap.
