Check out my shopping trip at Safeway! If you’re new to couponing then you’ll want to read my short article about saving money at Safeway.
I went shopping at Safeway yesterday….. Just to pick up a few things on sale. Are you making the most of coupons at Safeway? Well I encourage a frugal living plan for everyone which is much more then clipping and submitting coupons at the grocery store but you have to start somewhere so lets make sure you have a savings strategy.
- Plan to shop with 2 grocery stores. 1 store you’ll use to do your main shopping from week to week and then follow 1 other grocery store to just run in for the sales. By sales I mean those items that are at their rock bottom sale price and hopefully you have a coupon to match up with it! You won’t need to shop at 2 grocery stores every week but about 2 weeks out of 4. Remember you’re only picking up a few items at the second store (like I did above)
- Sign up for the Safeway Just for u program. As soon as you sign up you’ll get a FREE dozen eggs loaded to your card. Nice offer. Once you sign up you’ll see that they also have e-coupons and special Just for U offers that are loaded onto your Safeway Club Card. To load these offers click here and register your card with the number on the back of the card next to the bar card. You are supposed to be able to use paper standard manufacturer’s coupons AND e-coupons. Please remember, e-coupons are not ever doubled. Safeway in my area (Mid-Atlantic region) doubles coupons. NOTE: You cannot use 2 manufacturer’s coupons on the same item. If you have already loaded an e-coupon to your Safeway Club Card and now have a better, higher value, paper manufacturer’s coupon, the cashier/clerk is supposed to accept the higher value coupon. Just an FYI. Also, always check your “personalized” deals on Safeway Just for U. I’ve been receiving some great offer like $3 off a $10 produce purchase and milk for $1 less per gallon than listed in the store… many others too!
- Try and use paper coupons when possible with a value of 50¢ to 75¢ to 85¢. These coupons are doubled at many Safeway stores to $1.00, $1.50 to $1.70. That makes for a HUGE savings!
- Stack coupons when possible. “Stacking” is when you use a store coupon and a manufacturer’s coupon on 1 item for purchase. It doubles your savings and is a great strategy!
- Look for unadvertised deal. Safeway has a relatively small sale circular each week and there are ALWAYS items in store that are on sale and not listed in the circular. Go over your high value coupon (like 50¢, 75¢, 85¢) and check the price of those items in store. You may just find a HOT bargain!
- Check the Safeway Fresh Ideas Magazine each month. Its always has coupons in it and they are usually rare coupons for fresh produce!
Now comes the time where I get to tell you about the bargains I found in the picture above. These sales are good through today. Safeway changes out sales on Wednesday at the opening of business.
English Muffins – double pack $$1.99. Excellent price and I purchased 4 double packages. I have a large family and I’ll freeze 3 packages. You can’t get English Muffins this cheap at Walmart or any other grocery store this week.

So my total savings were 73% and I paid a grand total of $12.89 for;
- 1 box Cheerios Cereal
- 1 box Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal
- 4 packages of the English Muffins (double packs)
- 5 boxes of Kellogg’s Mini-Wheats Fruit in the Middle
This was a quick in out shopping trip that didn’t take long at all!
