My friend and I were discussing pet quirks earlier this week. She is a new dog owner, but has had cats for years. Her cat is liable to start barking any day now….because the cat is eating the dog food! Well I have some great ideas to help stop – cat eating dog food!
Most vets will tell you that dogs should never eat cat food, but what about when kitty decides that the puppy chow looks tasty? In reality, dog food is also not well-balanced for cats, so neither pet should eat the other’s food.
Cats need more protein than dogs do, so while a few bites here and there won’t be harmful, you should never consider buying just dog food to feed to both types of pets. Additionally, cats cannot process and break down the nutrient value of grains and vegetables found in most dog foods. Therefore, it holds very little nutritional value for them.
One quick fix is to use raised dog bowls. There is a secondary benefit to the dog, in that it helps them digest their food better. Petco sells an excellent one that is actually adjustable. It’s called the Petco Right Height Adjustable Elevated Dog Bowls and it has GREAT reviews (I like that).
Or for the really pampered pet, how about a heart –shaped elevated feeding dish like this one from Petsmart? Cute huh?
So the next time you see your cat eating dog food, keep in mind that while it may be an amusing event, it’s probably one that irritates the dog and isn’t healthy for kitty!
