Are you thinking that parenting is a huge task and that you need help maintaining the house? Well then you need to know 4 steps on how to teach your kids to do chores!
We’re a home school family so my house is used for 3 meals a day so it’s imperative that I get help with the house and that we keep it maintained. Why you ask? 1) for my own personal sanity 2) so we can keep organized with our home schooling. One day my kids will run their own house so if I don’t do a good job teaching them now then they’ll deal with clutter and be disorganized later in life.
Ok, so on to exactly HOW to teach them to do chores…. Well it’s a process.
1) Lead the child through every single step of the new chore you’d like accomplished by doing it along side with them
2) Complete the chore one more time (if it’s a younger child – not necessary for a teen as much) doing it along side with them
3) Allow the child to do the chore and check up on them
4) Every now and again (maybe a few times a month) join in on the chores to keep up the motivation
Complainers: Remember that if you’re complaining about your chores then your kids will likely complain about their chores. So, if you’d like a happy, cheery bunch of kids cheerfully sweeping and washing dishes then be cheerful yourself. If you’ve decided that allowance in payable for chores in your household then randomly find them being cheerful and happy while completing their tasks and DOUBLE the pay to keep up the motivation. After all, in the real work world you’d receive a raise for cheerfully completely your tasks, right?
Notes: I suggest that kids have their own chores and get rewarded in some way either on a weekly or daily basis. Compensation could be time on a computer gaming, money etc. I never suggest that you pay a child for cleaning up after themselves. That is part of life and daily tasks. Chores assist and benefit the family and keep a household running smoothly.
Switching chores: When a kid get sick of doing a certain task then it’s time to mix it up a bit. You can also switch tasks when a child ages and is able to handle different responsibilities.
