Pet owners and veterinarians have long debated whether a dry food or wet food or combination diet is best for your cat. There are definite benefits to both, from cost, to ease of feeding, to kitty’s personal preference. However, the health of cats needs to be considered as well, and for cats that are diabetic, a low carbohydrate cat food is recommended.
Dry food is generally higher in carbohydrates than wet food according to the numerous articles I’ve researched on the low carb cat food topic. For that reason, a low carbohydrate wet food diet is often suggested for a diabetic cat. Low carbohydrate food will increase insulin sensitivity. The sooner one starts the diabetic cat on a low-carbohydrate diet, the better. By “low-carb,” it should ideally provide less than 10% of the calories as carbohydrate. Therefore, when looking for a quality pet food, don’t stop reading the label after you look at the ingredients; check for the composition of protein/carbs/fat as well. That is important too.
Fortunately, there are several good options. I’ve done quite a bit of research on this topic.
Natural Balance offers a limited ingredient canned cat food that my friend’s diabetic kitty just loves and is doing really well with. I really liked the reviews on this cat food too (check them out at the link)
I like to use pouch-style wet food whenever possible (convenience is a wonderful thing ☺) and so this low carb cat food from Soulistic catches my eye.
These are just two of the great options that I particularly like. Good reviews (that is important to me) Better yet, both are available from PetCo, which offers a 5%-back offer when you are a Pet Pals member. Because I like to help you save money whenever possible, I highly suggest if you shop at PetCo that you join this free program. Click here to go to the Petco FREE Pet Pals rewards program.
