Mount Vernon by Candlelight – Where history comes to life….! This breathtaking experience begins in the Ford Orientation Center, where we enjoyed the sounds of the holiday season before our candle-lit lantern guided tour into the historic area, where the Mansion is aglow with candles and the history of 18th century Christmas past at the home of George and Martha Washington.
The mansion was absolutely beautiful with the moon shining down over this beautiful home with the Potomac lightly sparkling past the back hill. Inside, Martha Washington and other Mount Vernon residents and guests (all in period garb) welcomed us and shared stories of Christmases at Washington’s estate. The most humbling, historic & beautiful tour I’ve ever taken. Each room and guest in the mansion shares tales of their life during the Christmas season so long ago. We ended learning the Indian Queen dance by candlelight with a flute player for music. This dance was popular at the time in the 18th century.
After the tour, we enjoyed cookies and apple cider while listening to more stories of Christmas past around a fire. My kids are STILL talking about their night where they were taken back in time!
Public tours are open NOW thru December 16th & I HIGHLY suggest you treat your family to this amazing experience this Christmas season! You’ll learn about an endearing side of the Washington’s that you don’t read about in school. https://www.mountvernon.org/…/…/mount-vernon-by-candlelight/
