OPUS Merriweather: This Free Art + Music Festival is Fun for the Whole Family
Now in its second year, OPUS Merriweather is the FREE multi-sensory art and music festival taking place in Merriweather Post Pavilion and Symphony Woods in Columbia, Maryland on Saturday, October 13 from 5-11pm. This year, families are welcome to take in live musical performances, let loose for a meditative dance party, explore interactive art installations, and indulge in a Culinary Village featuring glow in the dark cotton candy to empanadas and everything in between. Here is what my family is looking forward to at this year’s OPUS Merriweather festival:
Adult and Kid Friendly Food — Even Michelin Starred!
My family and I could not be more excited to dive into all of the delicious food at the OPUS’s Culinary Village, featuring both DC and Baltimore restaurants. Number one on our food bucket list? The GLOW IN THE DARK cotton candy from Fluffness. I am hoping to get my children to try the famous Lychee Salad from Rose’s Luxury. Of course, I know they’ll devour the Philly cheesesteaks from Cured, artisanal gelato from Dolci Gelati, and grilled cheese from the Big Cheese Truck. With more than fifteen of the region’s top food purveyors all gathering in the woods of Columbia, this night is sure to be a truly unforgettable food adventure.
From DJs and Live Music — An Outdoor Party for Everyone
With DJs performing on the lawn of Merriweather Post Pavilion and live music on the Chrysalis stage at Symphony Woods, kids and adults will for sure be up on their feet dancing to the beat. OPUS encourages guests to tap into their curiosity and wonder, and provides ample opportunities for younger ones to get involved with the interactive performances – like the meditate dance party led by Debbie Attias. One thing is for sure – this is not an average music festival!
Interactive Art That Encourages Exploration
One of the dozens of interactive art installations we’re looking forward to is Matthew Schrieber’s Gemini, a 3,000 square foot glowing “cathedral” made only of beams of light hidden deep in the woods. There’s also the Yoko Ono’ famous Wish Tree series, which will be making it’s Maryland debut at OPUS. Families are encouraged to write their wish on a tag which will be hung on the tree, so not only will families be immersed in interactive art but one-of-a-kind culture as well.
OPUS Merriweather is on Saturday, October 13. Doors open at 4:30pm. RSVP for free at opusmerriweather.com.
