Outer Banks Travel, Visit Outer Banks Day #2 – Rise and shine it was time to head out the door for our next adventure! We had hoped day #2 in Dare County would bring just as many smiles as day #1 at the beach & watching the fishermen bring in their catch. It doesn’t seem hard to find fun here on these barrier islands and day #2 was just as filled with smiles and excitement.
After a quick tea and continental style breakfast at the Breakwater Inn we made a group decision to climb the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse before the heat of the day. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is one of the most recognizable lighthouses in the world with its black and white candy cane stripes, standing 208 feet tall, making it the tallest lighthouse in the world! It protects a dangerous stretch of the Outer Banks with its light spanning more than 20 miles into the ocean.
We arrived, bought our tickets and prepared to go inside and trek to the top in our comfy sneakers. Before you begin your climb you hear a short informative story about the Lighthouse and then when your time arrives on your ticket you make your way up the steps.
We wound our way up the spiral staircase up and up and up, 248 steps! That’s as many steps as climbing to the twelfth floor of a high-rise building! There are fun spots along the way where you can look out and see the ocean before you ever arrive at the top.
But wow, was the view worth every single step – you bet! You can see for miles at the top, from the brilliantly green maritime trees nearby to the sandy seashore stretching out and meeting the sparkling blue sea. It was incredibly beautiful! Absolutely well worth the ticket and the climbing challenge! Big smiles at the top and a beautiful indescribable feeling when you see Mother Earth’s beauty from so high in the sky!
When we had finished exploring the lighthouse we decided to take a break from the sun and get our creative juices flowing when we visited Studio 12 right in Hatteras. We had a chance to choose our own pottery pieces, paint them, glaze them and have them fired. No appointments are necessary in this welcoming little shop and kids are always encouraged to join in. There are classes available and you can create everything from mosaics to glass fusion jewelry.
It was nice to sit down and relax and see the kids have so much f! The walls are filled with original inspirational art pieces, ceramics, mosaics giving the place an eclectic fun vibe. We quickly found out that picking out your future masterpiece was half of the fun!
Now if you’re wondering about leaving the area before your piece is cured in the kiln (we were) they have the perfect solution! (We were spending 2 days on Hatteras then 2 days in the Kitty Hawk/Nags Head area) Studio 12 fires your piece and then pops it in the mail completely wrapped! The kids were thrilled when the trip was over and their art arrived in the mail. More take away treasures to memorialize this family adventure!
Our second day in Dare County on Cape Hatteras was just as fun as our first! There are so many fun activities to choose from and so many sights to see! You won’t be disappointed and trust me, you won’t be bored….! If you missed Day #1 of our exciting Outer Banks adventures go here.
