We decided to have a little ice cream party for my birthday tonight so I’ve been experimenting this week with recipes and this fried ice cream is wonderful! Plus – I have ice cream coupons for you! This recipe was really easy to make only taking minutes and tastes absolutely delicious! The most fun part about this fried ice cream is the homemade flour tortilla bowl I made! You just bake it in the oven and eat it with the fried ice cream! Its a really fun treat & really easy to make. Pin these for inspiration!
So to come up with this recipe I looked up 5 or 6 other recipes on fried ice cream and then I ultimately experimented and came up with my own. My inspiration was from Emeril but I changed my friend ice recipe to include a flour tortilla bowl and a different crust on the ice cream
First I started with small flour torillas. I spread, with my finger tips, a small amount of oil all over 1 side and then used my McCormick’s cinnamon & sugar grinder to cover it with fresh fragrant spices. If you don’t have a cinnamon & super grinder you can just mix your own cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle the top side of the tortilla after you’ve lightly added the oil. I prefer coconut oil for a fabulous tropical light flavor but you can use an oil you like.
Second – You just use the bottom of a cupcake pan to shape your flour tortilla bowl. Its easy and it takes only a few seconds. Then bake at 350 degrees about 2 1/2 to 5 minutes until lightly bakes and tips are very slightly browned.
Now for the fried ice cream. First you need to get a bowl and fill half way with 50% Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes & 50% sweetened cocout. I just used my hand to crunch and mix but some of you may want to place the Frosted Flakes in a ziploc baggie and smash with a rolling pin but that seemed like too much work for me and only took maybe 3 to 5 seconds to lightly crunch & mix quickly with my hand.
Scoop our your ice cream is a round ball and then cover with your Frosted Flakes and coconut mixture. Use hands to form and push mixture onto the ice cream ball. Now place in your freezer for 30 minutes to 2 hours to set well. I say 30 minutes if your freezer is really cold and isn’t opened constantly. Set 2 hours if your kids are like mine, go in the freezer and keep it open for long periods while their getting something.
After your mixture has set on the ice cream pull from the freezer. Roll your ball in whipped egg then into the mixture one more time to give it a nice thick coating of your Frosted Flakes and Coconut mixture. No its time to fry. Get your oil hot and plop in your ice cream balls and fry quickly and lightly. Amazingly the mixture on the outside keeps the ice cream from melting! Remove from oil and place your fried ice cream in your flour tortilla bowl and enjoy! Its delicious, fast and easy! A great treat that you can prepare in advance for a fun ice cream party! Giggly kids make it even better! ☺
Note: If you don’t have a deep fryer no worries – I don’t either. Just use oil in a pan to fry. You’ll need plenty of oil to cover the ice cream ball or at least make it so your only have to turn it once very quickly. Whipped cream and cherries are optional toppings. I like my mom’s recipe for fast homemade hot fudge.
Mom’s Homemade Hot Fudge:
Melt over low heat 1 full stick butter (1/4lb) with 2 squares bakers chocolate. Mix & add 1 can sweetened condensed Milk. Its delicious! Pour over your fried ice cream!
